Midnight Tragedy in Nepal: 18 Killed as Bus Plunges Into River

Crash near the Trishuli River in Dhading District leaves dozens injured; victims include one New Zealand national dead and women from Japan and the Netherlands among the injured

Kathmandu: At least 18 people were killed, and over two dozen were injured after a passenger bus veered off the highway and plunged into the Trishuli River in Dhading District, Nepal, in the early hours of Monday.

The bus was reportedly travelling from Pokhara to Kathmandu along the Prithvi Highway when the driver reportedly lost control around 1.30 a.m. The unfortunate incident resulted in the vehicle falling into the river near the Benighat Rorang area. Police suspect over-speeding on the hilly stretch, though the exact cause remains under investigation.

Officials of the Armed Police Force said 17 bodies were initially recovered from the site. The toll later rose to 18 after another injured passenger succumbed to injuries. At least 28 passengers were rescued and shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Authorities confirmed the presence of foreign nationals among the casualties. A male passenger from New Zealand died in the crash, while two women from Japan and the Netherlands were injured and are undergoing treatment.
