Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu Inaugurated: PM Launches Key Infrastructure Projects in Assam

Six-lane bridge over the Brahmaputra River to boost connectivity as electric buses, data centre and IIM campus also unveiled

Guwahti: Assam witnessed a landmark day in infrastructure development as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a series of transformative projects, headlined by the dedication of the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu and the Northeast’s first Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) at Moran in Dibrugarh.

On his arrival at Moran, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma accorded a traditional Assamese welcome to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, presenting him with a gamusa and jaapi, the enduring symbols of the state’s cultural pride, along with a portrait of Birangana Sati Sadhani, the last queen of the Chutia dynasty.

The newly operational ELF, inaugurated by the Prime Minister, developed in coordination with the Indian Air Force, has been built as a dual-use facility for both defence and civilian emergencies. Constructed along the Dibrugarh–Moran highway, it allows aircraft landings during crises and significantly strengthens rapid response and strategic preparedness in the region.

The Prime Minister later inaugurated the six-lane extradosed Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu over the Brahmaputra River, built at a cost of over Rs 3,000 crore. The modern bridge reduces travel time between Guwahati and North Guwahati from nearly 40 minutes to just seven minutes, greatly improving daily commuting, trade movement and access to major institutions.

During the visit, Modi also dedicated the regional National Data Centre and inaugurated the transit campus of the Indian Institute of Management Guwahati. Additionally, 100 electric buses were flagged off in Guwahati under the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme to promote clean and efficient urban transport.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Assam Governor Lakshman Acharya, Ministers Pijush Hazarika and Atul Bora, and BJP state president Dilip Saikia, among others, lending full ceremonial presence to the occasion.

Later in Guwahati, the Prime Minister addressed a massive booth-level Vijay Sankalp Sabha organised by Bharatiya Janata Party – Assam, where enthusiastic party workers gathered in large numbers. The rally highlighted organisational strength and public support, with leaders expressing confidence about continued development and strong electoral prospects.
