Prime Minister calls Assam’s iconic symbol a reflection of women’s strength and resilience, pride

Guwahati: Assam’s cultural heritage received national recognition once again as Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the iconic Gamusa during Pariksha Pe Charcha 2026, describing it as one of the most cherished symbols and a powerful representation of the strength and dignity in Assam and the Northeast.
Speaking during the interaction, the Prime Minister expressed deep respect for the traditional handwoven cloth, underscoring how the Gamusa embodies Assam’s identity and rich artisanal legacy. His remarks reinforced the growing presence of Assamese heritage on the national stage, where traditional crafts and symbols are increasingly celebrated as integral to India’s diverse cultural fabric.
Over the years, the Gamusa has evolved beyond a regional emblem to gain nationwide recognition, frequently featured at national events, official programmes, and global platforms. Woven largely by women artisans, it has also become a symbol of grassroots empowerment and self-reliance, linking tradition with livelihoods.
Responding to the Prime Minister’s appreciation, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma thanked him for consistently honouring Assam’s heritage. He noted that such recognition boosts the morale of thousands of weavers and strengthens their confidence, while reaffirming the Prime Minister’s enduring connection with the people of the state.
The acknowledgement serves as a reminder that local traditions, when embraced nationally, not only preserve culture but also empower communities and promote inclusive growth.
