Feb 8 Showdown: Sarma Signals Big Expose on Gogoi

Assam CM promises evidence-backed revelations, legal action, and sharp attack on Congress

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on February 5 levelled serious allegations against Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi, claiming that members of Gogoi’s family maintain operational bank accounts in Pakistan, a charge that has sharply escalated political tensions in the state.

Addressing the media, Sarma said he would soon place substantial evidence in the public domain and dismissed suggestions that the allegations were politically motivated. “On the 8th, we are going to bring forward a major allegation with substantial evidence,” he said, adding that attempts would be made to defame him before then.

Projecting confidence, the Chief Minister maintained that he had nothing to hide. “No one can prove a single charge against me, because I have done nothing wrong,” he stated. “Since entering politics in 1996, not even the smallest proof has been produced against me.”

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the ‘Booth Vijay Abhiyan’ in Jalukbari, he also warned of legal action against his detractors. “I will take all of them to court, and they must prove their allegations there.”

Stepping up his attack on the Congress, Sarma accused the party of compromising Assam’s interests for political gains. “But even today, I can challenge and say that all these Congress members are a part of a party that is bent on selling Assam. They are ready to sell off Assam for their own interests”, he alleged.

Defending his governance record, Sarma said welfare measures were being misrepresented. “If protecting Assam’s honour is my crime, if giving Orundoi to 40 lakh families is a crime, if providing entrepreneurship support to 32 lakh women is a crime, if such a large-scale development of Assam in five years is considered an injustice, so be it. Then I cannot say anything.”

Calling the current revelations only the beginning, he added, “I will speak more clearly about their indulgence of and all their misdeeds on 8th February”
