Assam CM Announces Defamation Action Against Opposition Leaders

Chief Minister says “hit-and-run politics” won’t be tolerated; challenges critics to prove allegations in court

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that he will initiate both civil and criminal defamation proceedings against four opposition leaders, accusing them of making “false, malicious and defamatory” statements against him during a press conference.

In a post on social media, Sarma named Congress leaders Jitendra Singh Alwar, Bhupesh Baghel, Gaurav Gogoi, and Debabrata Saikia as those he intends to take legal action against. He stated that the proceedings will formally begin on February 9, 2026.

Calling out what he described as a pattern of “hit-and-run politics,” the Chief Minister asserted that baseless accusations made for political mileage would no longer go unanswered. He emphasised that allegations made in public forums must be backed by facts and evidence.

Furthermore, the Chief Minister also directly challenged the opposition leaders to substantiate their claims in a court of law. “If they have even an ounce of courage or evidence, let them prove every allegation before a court of law”, he said, underscoring his readiness to legally contest the charges.

The Chief Minister also accused his critics of engaging in propaganda, coordinated slander, and political theatrics. In a sharp remark, he described them as “so-called slaves of the Gandhi family,” signalling heightened political tensions between the ruling BJP and the Congress ahead of key political developments in the state.

The move marks a significant escalation in the ongoing political confrontation, with the legal route now set to become the battleground. As the case proceeds, the spotlight is likely to remain on both the allegations and the evidence presented by either side.
