Kamrup Metropolitan District and Sessions Court to decide bail pleas of three accused as SIT opposes release and multiple related petitions come up for hearing

Guwahati: The Kamrup Metropolitan District and Sessions Court is set to hear and pronounce its order on the bail petitions of three accused in the high-profile Zubeen Garg death case, a matter that continues to attract significant public attention across Assam today, January 30.
The court will decide on the bail applications of singer Amritprabha Mahanta and the late artiste’s personal security officers, Nandeshwar Bora and Paresh Baishya. Meanwhile, two other accused, North East India Festival director Shyamkanu Mahanta and Garg’s cousin Sandipan Garg, had earlier withdrawn their bail pleas on January 22, citing legal and personal reasons as well as developments in the case.
Moreover, Siddhartha Sharma, Garg’s secretary, and Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, a member of the band, are also charged in the case but have not applied for bail yet.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT), which is probing the incident, has moved the court seeking rejection of bail for several accused. Zubeen Garg’s wife, Garima Garg, has also filed a petition opposing their release.
In addition to the bail matters, the court will take up several related applications. These include the SIT’s plea to seize a flat allegedly purchased with misappropriated funds, a request to defreeze bank accounts linked to one of the accused, and a petition for a medical examination filed by another.
The state cabinet had already chosen a five-member team of special public prosecutors. Senior lawyer Ziaul Kamar led the team, and Brojendra Mohan Choudhury served as the additional public prosecutor. Kishor Dutta, Pranjal Dutta, and Vikash Jammar were the assistant public prosecutors.
Zubeen Garg died under mysterious circumstances on September 19 while attending the North East India Festival in Singapore, where he reportedly drowned while swimming. Following public demand, the Assam government constituted an SIT, which filed its chargesheet in December, bringing charges ranging from murder and culpable homicide to criminal conspiracy and breach of trust.
