Hundreds of trucks carrying essential commodities were stranded along the Assam–Manipur border for days amid security concerns, disrupting supplies and leaving drivers without basic necessities
Imphal: The movement of goods-laden trucks into Manipur resumed on Monday under police escort, bringing relief after hundreds of vehicles remained stranded along the Assam–Manipur border for several days due to security concerns.
Trucks transporting food grains, daily essentials and other commodities from different parts of the country had been unable to enter the state, resulting in long queues of vehicles and disrupting the supply of essential goods to Manipur.
The prolonged halt left truck drivers and helpers facing severe hardship. Many alleged they had been stranded without adequate food, safe drinking water or medical assistance, with some reportedly relying on nearby hill streams for water. The disruption also caused perishable goods to deteriorate, while transporters and traders suffered financial losses because of delayed deliveries.
Drivers appealed to the authorities to restore normal traffic and provide immediate relief measures, including food, drinking water and healthcare support for those stranded at the border.
On Monday morning, authorities began escorting convoys of goods vehicles into Manipur under police protection to ensure their safe passage and prevent any untoward incidents during transit.
The resumption of freight movement is expected to ease pressure on supply chains and improve the availability of essential commodities in the state, although concerns remain over ensuring uninterrupted highway connectivity and the safety of transporters in the coming days.
