Flood-hit schools in the affected areas will reopen after August 15 as Assam works to restore over 150 schools damaged by floodwater, mud and silt
Guwahati: Classes at flood-affected schools in Sivasagar, Nazira and Charaideo will resume after August 15, subject to the receding of floodwaters and completion of restoration work, Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu said. He added that 150 schools across flood-affected districts remain submerged or have suffered damage from floodwater, mud and silt.
Several campuses are still waterlogged, while others have been covered with layers of mud and silt after the floodwaters receded, preventing an immediate return to regular classes. The Education Department is assessing the condition of the affected institutions and carrying out necessary restoration work, the minister said.
Classes will resume after August 15, depending on the condition of individual school premises and the progress of restoration, Pegu added. The delay comes as parts of Upper Assam continue to recover from the floods, with waterlogging and damage to educational infrastructure disrupting academic activities.
The minister said the priority was to ensure that schools are restored and made safe before students return to classrooms.
