Panel to oversee the Pre-Feasibility Report survey, with government stressing transparency, community engagement and the concerns of affected families
Itanagar: The Arunachal Pradesh Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Pema Khandu, on Wednesday approved the formation of an Empowered High-Level Committee to oversee and coordinate the Pre-Feasibility Report (PFR) survey for the proposed Upper Siang Multipurpose Project in Siang and Upper Siang districts.
The committee will be headed by Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Ojing Tasing, with Chief Minister’s Advisor and MLA Alo Libang and Geku-Mariyang MLA Oni Panyang as members.
The Cabinet said the survey should be conducted in a transparent, peaceful and people-centric manner, while ensuring sustained engagement with residents of the two districts.
The proposed project was declared a National Project by the Centre in 2008. According to the state government, it could strengthen water and energy security, help moderate floods in the Siang-Brahmaputra basin and create employment opportunities.
The Cabinet also took note of concerns among sections of the local population over alleged misinformation and disinformation surrounding the project. It said the welfare and aspirations of Project Affected Families and local communities would remain central to the process, while development would be pursued alongside respect for local traditions and community interests.
