The Indian-origin space veteran Sunita William concluded her 27-year stint with record-breaking missions, spacewalks, and global inspiration

New Delhi: Indian‑origin NASA astronaut Sunita Williams has retired after a distinguished 27‑year career with the U.S. space agency, effective December 27, 2025. Her retirement marks the end of one of the most remarkable eras in human spaceflight.
The NASA astronaut made her first journey to space on December 9, 2006, launching aboard space shuttle Discovery on mission STS-116. Serving as a flight engineer for Expeditions 14 and 15, she performed a total of four spacewalks, garnering a record 29 hours and 17 minutes outside the spacecraft.
Williams flew three missions to the ISS. She has accumulated more than 600 days in orbit, the second‑highest total time in space for any NASA astronaut. She holds the record for most spacewalking hours by a woman, with 62 hours in nine spacewalks, and became the first person to run a marathon in space.
Moreover, Williams represents one of only a few astronauts to have flown on four orbital crafts: Space Shuttle, Soyuz TMA, Starliner, and Dragon. She is also the first female to pilot a newly developed orbital spacecraft.
Her last mission, expected to be a short test flight aboard a Boeing Starliner, ended up being more than nine months long when she docked at the ISS, which shows her ability as a space explorer. She and astronaut Butch Wilmore returned home on a SpaceX capsule in March 2025.
NASA Administrator Administrator of NASA, Jared Isaacman praised Williams as “one of the most accomplished astronauts in history.” Her contributions and leadership in space have paved the way for Missions to the Moon in the Artemis program and on to Mars. He further appreciated Williams, stating, “Thank you, Suni, for setting the gold standard for human spaceflight and inspiring everyone who follows.”
William’s illustrious career has been a source of motivation to countless people, particularly within India and among people of Indian origin around the globe, where she is revered and honoured not just for her path-breaking achievements but also for her embodiment of commitment, courage, and excellence.
