“Why Was He Taken Out of Judicial Custody at Night?”: Ghanakanta Gogoi’s Wife Questions Police Firing

Following a post-mortem at AMCH, Jonmoni Gogoi disputed the police claim that her husband attempted to escape and sought the Assam Chief Minister’s intervention

Guwahati: The body of Ghanakanta Gogoi, the prime accused in the October 26 Guwahati hotel shooting that claimed five lives, was handed over to his family on Thursday evening, November 5, following a post-mortem examination at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh.

His wife, Jonmoni Gogoi, questioned the circumstances surrounding his death in police firing, rejecting the police claim that he had attempted to escape from custody. Speaking in Naharkatia, she sought Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s intervention and questioned why her husband had been taken out of judicial custody at night.

The post-mortem was conducted in the presence of forensic medicine experts from three medical institutions, in accordance with National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) guidelines for custodial deaths. The examination lasted more than three hours, and the body was handed over at around 7.10 pm.

Gogoi, 34, was killed around 3.10 am on Wednesday in the Gaurisagar area of Sivasagar district. Police claimed he attempted to flee while being taken to Sivasagar in connection with a separate bank fraud case.

He had completed seven days of police remand on Tuesday and was subsequently sent to judicial custody. Hours later, he was taken from Guwahati Central Jail in connection with the separate case.
