The scheme, covering 2026–27 to 2033–34, aims to boost domestic manufacturing, support MSMEs, promote innovation and expand India’s sports goods exports

New Delhi: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the Khelo India Sports Goods Manufacturing Scheme with an outlay of Rs 1,856.67 crore for the period from 2026–27 to 2033–34.
Announced in the Union Budget 2026–27, the scheme aims to strengthen domestic manufacturing, attract investment, generate employment and improve India’s competitiveness in global sports goods markets.
The initiative will focus on promoting investment, technology adoption, research, innovation, skill development and exports. It is aligned with Khelo Bharat Niti 2025, Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat, with the broader objective of integrating Indian manufacturers into global supply chains and reducing reliance on imports.
Under the scheme, Rs 1,130 crore has been earmarked for investment support and production growth, while Rs 105 crore will support international sports federation certifications.
Other interventions include developing sports goods manufacturing zones, strengthening micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and existing manufacturing clusters, and supporting research, innovation, start-ups and skill development.
The scheme also aims to promote Indian sports goods in international markets. Proposed manufacturing clusters include Meerut, Jalandhar-Ludhiana and Jammu, with the initiative expected to help manufacturers scale up production, improve product quality and expand exports.
The scheme seeks to establish India as a globally competitive sports goods manufacturing hub while creating employment opportunities and encouraging innovation across the sector.
