Woman Detained After Alleged Attack on Mamata Banerjee Outside Kolkata Residence

TMC leaders allege a knife attack on the former West Bengal Chief Minister; police say a woman confronted her, triggering a heated altercation.

Kolkata: A woman was detained after allegedly attempting to attack former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee outside her residence in Kalighat, Kolkata, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders said.

Rajya Sabha MP Dola Sen lodged a complaint with Kalighat police, alleging that the woman approached Banerjee with a knife. Sen also raised concerns about how the woman could reach a leader protected under Z-plus security.

However, a police statement said that Anusua Saha, a 38-year-old Kolkata resident and civic police volunteer posted at West Port Police Station, confronted Banerjee as she was leaving her residence, leading to a heated altercation. Police personnel detained Saha, and a complaint was subsequently filed by TMC members. No injuries to Banerjee were reported.

TMC MP Kirti Azad alleged on social media that the incident was an attack sponsored by BJP supporters, though the allegation was not independently established. West Bengal minister Agnimitra Paul said action should be taken if an attack had been attempted, adding that her party did not endorse such incidents.

The incident comes amid heightened political tensions following the TMC’s Assembly election defeat and protests by party leaders demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the scrapping of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
