CITU Stages Protest in Guwahati: Burns Gyanesh Kumar’s Effigy Over Alleged Voter Deletions

Demonstrators at Basistha New Market demand the Chief Election Commissioner’s resignation, alleging wrongful exclusion of eligible voters from electoral rolls

Guwahati: The Guwahati Metropolitan Committee of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) staged a protest at Basistha New Market, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations of arbitrary deletion of voters’ names from electoral rolls.

The demonstration was held in solidarity with similar protests in Delhi and other parts of the country, where organisations have raised concerns over the alleged removal of eligible voters from electoral lists.

During the protest, participants raised slogans against Kumar and burnt his effigy, accusing the authorities of undermining citizens’ democratic rights by excluding eligible voters without adequate justification.

The All India Kisan Shramik Sangathan also extended support to the demonstration, with members joining the CITU-led protest.

The participating organisations called on the Election Commission to ensure transparency and fairness in the preparation and revision of electoral rolls. They demanded stronger safeguards and proper verification procedures to prevent eligible citizens from being wrongfully excluded from voter lists.

The Guwahati demonstration formed part of a wider campaign seeking Kumar’s resignation over the allegations. The claims raised by the protesting organisations have not been independently established in the information provided.
