Assistant Executive Engineer Mridul Baglari was allegedly caught accepting Rs 30,000 as the first instalment of a bribe sought for clearing a contractor’s pending bill

Dibrugarh: An Assistant Executive Engineer of the Assam Public Works Department (PWD) was arrested in Dibrugarh on Tuesday after the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) allegedly caught him accepting a Rs 30,000 bribe during a trap operation.
The accused, identified as Mridul Baglari, was posted at the office of the Superintending Engineer, PWD (Building Division), in Dibrugarh.
According to the DVAC, it received a complaint alleging that Baglari had demanded Rs 1.30 lakh from a contractor for processing and releasing payment against pending bills. Acting on the complaint, the agency laid a trap and allegedly caught him red-handed inside his office chamber while accepting Rs 30,000 as the first instalment.
The alleged bribe money was recovered from his possession and seized in the presence of independent witnesses, the agency said.
The complaint was filed by PWD contractor Rajashekhar Hazarika, who said payments linked to completed works had been withheld. He alleged that Baglari had demanded money for processing the bills. The vigilance team also searched Baglari’s residence in Khaniagaon following the trap operation.
A case has been registered at the Anti-Corruption Bureau police station under relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. The DVAC said sufficient evidence had been found against the accused public servant and that further legal proceedings were underway.
