BJP wins 32 wards while alliance partner AGP takes two as the NDA dominates Silchar’s first municipal corporation election

Silchar: The BJP-led NDA has swept the first-ever Silchar Municipal Corporation (SMC) election, winning 34 of the 42 wards, with the BJP alone securing 32 seats.
Alliance partner AGP won two wards, taking the NDA’s total to 34. The Congress was reduced to just two wards, while Independent candidates won six.
The BJP had already secured two wards uncontested, with polling held in the remaining 40 wards on October 3. Counting began on Tuesday under tight security to determine the composition of the first elected council of the newly constituted municipal corporation.
The election marked Silchar’s first civic polls since the former Municipal Board was upgraded to a Municipal Corporation.
Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia welcomed the result, claiming that the NDA’s performance reflected voters’ faith in the BJP and the development agenda of the state government. He said the Congress had been reduced to a marginal presence in the corporation.
The first SMC election recorded a 70.22 per cent voter turnout, with voters participating across all 42 wards. The results give the NDA a clear majority in Silchar’s first municipal corporation council, with the BJP emerging as the dominant party.
