Seven people have been arrested after a woman was allegedly assaulted inside a Khanapara bar, with police examining CCTV footage and the establishment’s alleged violations
Guwahati: Seven people have been arrested after a video showing a woman allegedly being assaulted by a group inside The Locals Bar Cum Restaurant in Khanapara surfaced on social media, prompting a police investigation.
According to police, the incident took place at around 2:30 am on October 2. An examination of CCTV footage allegedly showed the woman being assaulted inside the bar before she was dragged towards the basement by her hair and clothes, where she was allegedly assaulted again and appeared to become semi-conscious.
Police said their enquiry found that several people allegedly involved in the incident were associated with the bar’s management or staff. The establishment was also allegedly operating beyond its permitted closing time of 12:30 am and had not informed the local police station about the incident.
Following the enquiry, Dispur Police registered a suo motu case under Sections 61(2), 117(2), 74, 75, 109 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
The seven arrested persons have been identified as bar manager Justin D. Areng, event manager Nikebur Zaman Sarkar alias Nikebur Zaman Sardar alias Roman, front office executive Jhumpa Sinha, and Usha Devi, Manju Das, Gourav Mahanta and Dino Sona.
Police said the investigation is examining the complete sequence of events, the role of each person involved and possible violations by the establishment.
