Assam’s AJP seeks EC clarification over reported disagreements on electoral-roll decisions and calls for a return to paper ballots
Guwahati: The Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) on September 23 questioned the credibility of the 2026 Assam Assembly election, citing a report on disagreements within the Election Commission of India over decisions related to electoral rolls.
AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi and general secretary Jagadish Bhuyan alleged that the election result was a “verdict of the EVM, and not the people” and demanded that the poll panel clarify the issues raised in the report.
The reaction followed a report that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had formally raised objections at least 14 times over 10 months regarding decisions concerning voter additions, deletions and restoration of names, as well as access to electoral-roll databases and IT systems.
The AJP said such disagreements raised questions about transparency and public confidence in the electoral process.
The Election Commission, however, said differences of opinion among its members were part of institutional deliberation and maintained that decisions taken over the past year were unanimous decisions of the full commission.
The AJP called for greater transparency and accountability in the poll panel’s functioning and urged the Election Commission to discontinue EVM-based voting and return to paper ballots.
