The statewide rollout will expand Assam’s existing digital file-management system beyond the Secretariat to government offices across the state
Guwahati: The Assam government has set January 1, 2027, as the deadline for all government offices in the state to transition to a paperless e-Office system, the Chief Minister’s Office announced on Wednesday.
Describing the move as a new phase in Assam’s digital governance initiative, the CMO said the transition would make public services more transparent, efficient and citizen-centric.
Assam already uses the National Informatics Centre (NIC)-developed e-Office platform across the Secretariat, with all 58 departments currently using the system. Its implementation is also being extended to selected directorates and Deputy Commissioner’s offices.
The e-Office platform replaces conventional paper-based file handling with digital workflows, allowing officials to receive documents, create and move files, prepare notes and drafts, digitally sign documents and track file movement online.
Assam began expanding e-Office implementation to districts in 2021 and launched e-Office District in 2026 to strengthen paperless administration at the district level.
The January 2027 deadline will now extend the digital system across the wider government machinery, marking a significant expansion of Assam’s ongoing shift towards paperless administration.
