The death toll in the September 13 Longpi ambush in Manipur’s Noney district has risen to three after 21-year-old Nei Esther Gangte died from her injuries
Imphal: The death toll from the September 13 ambush at Longpi village in Manipur’s Noney district has risen to three after 21-year-old Nei Esther Gangte succumbed to her injuries on Sunday.
Gangte died at the District Hospital in Churachandpur after battling multiple bullet injuries for seven days. According to accounts from the area, villagers carried the critically injured woman for nearly 20 km on a makeshift palanquin before she could access medical treatment.
The September 13 attack had earlier claimed the lives of Thangvel Gangte and Julie Singson, who was reportedly pregnant. The three were reportedly travelling to purchase rice and other household essentials when they were attacked.
Police and official accounts have described the assailants as unidentified armed men. Kuki-Zo organisations, however, have alleged the involvement of NSCN-IM and ZUF-K cadres, and have called for the perpetrators to be apprehended and prosecuted.
Gangte’s death has renewed calls from community organisations for accountability and stronger security for civilians in vulnerable villages across the conflict-affected region.
