YAS Director Mayengbam Veto Singh outlines plans to strengthen sports infrastructure, attract investment and promote traditional sporting disciplines across the state
Imphal: Manipur has unveiled an ambitious roadmap, ‘Vision 2030: Manipur as Sports Capital’, aimed at positioning the state as a hub for sports, tourism and athletic development.
Youth Affairs and Sports (YAS) Director Mayengbam Veto Singh presented the blueprint during a press briefing on Friday, calling on global investors, developers and stakeholders to explore Manipur’s sporting culture, diverse terrain and strategic location.
The roadmap identifies infrastructure gaps in remote hill districts, funding shortages and connectivity constraints as key challenges. It also stresses the need to preserve the state’s indigenous sporting traditions.
Manipur currently has more than 40 active sports disciplines across club and school networks and has produced 19 Olympians, including three medalists, besides 26 Asian Games and 36 Commonwealth Games medalists.
The department has identified football, boxing, weightlifting, hockey and combat sports for targeted development.
The plan also seeks to promote traditional disciplines such as Sagol Kangjei (Polo), Mukna, Thang-Ta and Yubi Lakpi, while expanding public-private partnerships, sports science, nutrition and performance analytics.
