Congress faces setbacks in Silchar and Dhing as workers join BJP over ticket distribution and Nagaon candidate selection
Guwahati: The Congress has suffered a setback ahead of the Silchar Municipal Corporation elections, with workers and supporters from Wards 40 and 41 joining the BJP.
The new entrants, who joined the BJP by accepting the party flag from district president Rupam Saha, alleged that their preferred candidates were denied Congress tickets. They also claimed their areas had not witnessed the expected development despite their long association with the party.
The workers alleged that well-known candidates in the two wards were overlooked in favour of relatively unfamiliar nominees, prompting their decision to switch parties. They expressed confidence that the BJP would win both wards and accelerate development.
Meanwhile, Congress has faced another setback in Dhing, where more than 50 leaders and workers joined the BJP following dissatisfaction over the selection of Sibamoni Bora as the party’s Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll candidate.
Among those joining the BJP were Congress social media team state coordinator Bulbul Alam, Dhing Block Youth Congress general secretary Azaharul Haque Choudhury and booth committee president Jiabur Rahman. The defections come as parties intensify preparations for the upcoming electoral contests in Assam.
