The National Human Rights Commission has directed the Arunachal Pradesh Chief Secretary to inquire into allegations of violence, vandalism and assault at an ERO office in Bordumsa during an SIR hearing
Itanagar: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken cognisance of allegations of violence, vandalism and assault at the ADC-cum-Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) office in Bordumsa, Changlang district, Arunachal Pradesh.
The incident reportedly took place on September 4 during a hearing related to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The All India Chakma Students’ Union (AICSU), the apex body representing Chakma students in India, had approached the NHRC seeking action over the alleged incident.
According to AICSU, the NHRC has taken cognisance of the complaint under Section 12 of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993. The commission has directed the Chief Secretary of Arunachal Pradesh to inquire into the allegations and submit an Action Taken Report within two weeks.
The NHRC has also observed that the allegations, prima facie, appear to involve violations of the human rights of the victims, AICSU said. Welcoming the intervention, the student organisation said it approached the human rights body with faith in the rule of law and the Constitution.
AICSU urged the state government to conduct a fair, impartial and time-bound inquiry and take appropriate legal action against those found responsible for the alleged violence, vandalism, assault on a public official and destruction of SIR forms.
The organisation also appealed to all stakeholders to maintain peace, harmony and brotherhood following the incident.
