Silchar: The Trinamool Congress suffered a major organisational setback in Assam’s Cachar district on Sunday as 50 leaders and workers, including district president Rajesh Deb and senior leader Mohan Lal Das, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of Silchar’s first municipal corporation election.
Assam BJP president and Lok Sabha MP Dilip Saikia welcomed the new entrants at the party’s Cachar district office in the presence of Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev, who herself switched from the TMC to the BJP in June.
Saikia described the induction as an expansion of the “BJP family” and said the new members would strengthen the party’s organisational network in the Barak Valley.
At a press conference, Saikia also outlined the BJP’s proposed development agenda for Silchar. He said the party had received 249 nominations for the corporation’s 42 wards.
The proposed measures include pumping stations in waterlogging-prone areas, widening and deepening key canals, covered RCC drains in every ward and regular drainage maintenance.
The BJP also plans 100 per cent door-to-door garbage collection, source segregation and QR-code-based monitoring. Traffic measures include designated parking zones, e-rickshaw stands, footpaths, streetlights, CCTV cameras and multi-storey parking facilities.
Saikia further proposed ward-level service centres, skill development centres and safer public spaces for senior citizens, women and persons with disabilities.
The Silchar Municipal Corporation election is scheduled for October 3, giving the BJP a little over three weeks to consolidate its organisational presence in the city.
