ED Summons Assam Mining Director Paragmoni Mahanta in Rs 100-Crore Irregularities Probe

The probe covers alleged payments, AMDC losses, recruitment-related transactions and suspected diversion of funds meant for retired employees

Guwahati: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned Assam Civil Service officer Paragmoni Mahanta for questioning in connection with alleged financial irregularities involving nearly Rs 100 crore, sources said.

Mahanta, currently serving as director of the Assam Geology and Mining Department, is being questioned over financial dealings linked to different senior positions he held, including his association with the Assam Mineral Development Corporation (AMDC).

Among the allegations under scrutiny is a monthly payment of around Rs 50,000 that Mahanta allegedly received from the corporation. The probe also concerns an estimated Rs 5.60-crore loss to the AMDC and transactions linked to recruitment.

The ED is also examining allegations that funds meant for retired employees were diverted. As part of the inquiry, the agency has reportedly gathered information about a laptop worth around Rs 2 lakh, allegedly purchased using diverted funds and later given to Mahanta’s child.

Another allegation involves the alleged diversion of around Rs 15,000 per month in the name of a cleaning worker. Mahanta’s earlier tenures in the Assam Rural Infrastructure and Technology (ARTFED) and the Handloom and Textiles Department have also come under scrutiny over alleged financial irregularities.

The ED is expected to seek Mahanta’s response to the allegations and examine financial transactions associated with his various postings. No allegation against Mahanta has been established so far, and the investigation remains ongoing.
