‘Dimagi Naxal’ Remarks Sparks Viral Rise of Satirical Instagram Account

The parody account has turned a phrase from Narendra Modi’s Red Fort address into a growing platform for political satire and online commentary

New Delhi: A satirical Instagram account named “Dimagi Naxal Party” has drawn widespread attention after Prime Minister Narendra Modi used the phrase “dimaagi Naxals” during his Independence Day address.

The account crossed 2.6 lakh followers within a day of Modi’s speech and had surpassed 4 lakh followers by Tuesday morning, August 18, amid growing political debate over the phrase.

Created in August, the account uses political satire and internet humour to comment on governance and public life. Its profile carries the slogan “Think, Research and Resist” and says it follows the ideology of freedom fighter Bhagat Singh.

The account had published more than 60 posts and briefly became inaccessible before returning online. The reason for its temporary disappearance remains unclear.

The development comes after Modi used “dimaagi Naxals” in his August 15 Red Fort address while speaking about Left-Wing Extremism. He accused those he described as “dimaagi Naxals” of promoting Maoist ideology and influencing policymaking.

The remark drew criticism from Opposition leaders, with Congress leader P Chidambaram saying he was “proud to be a dimaagi Naxal”. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju defended Modi’s remarks, saying they targeted supporters of Maoism and separatism.

The rapid growth of the parody account has added a social-media dimension to the political debate, turning the controversial phrase into a vehicle for satire and political commentary.
