The scheme resumes after a three-month suspension, while CM Himanta Biswa Sarma also reaffirmed Assam’s stand on its territorial interests in the border dispute with Arunachal Pradesh
Nagaon: The Assam government on Sunday, August 10, resumed its subsidised pulses and sugar scheme, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma saying around 70 lakh people across the state will benefit from the initiative.
The scheme was relaunched from Raha in Nagaon district after remaining suspended for three months due to delays linked to the state budget. Under the scheme, pulses and sugar will be made available at an affordable price of Rs 100.
The government could not resume the supply of salt immediately due to technical issues. Sarma said the distribution of salt would begin within a few days. The scheme was originally introduced ahead of the Assembly elections to provide sugar, pulses and salt at subsidised rates.
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister also spoke about the ongoing border dispute between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. He said discussions were underway between the Chief Secretaries of the two states, while the Directors General of Police were also examining the situation.
The Chief Minister maintained that Assam would not compromise on its territorial interests. “Assam’s land will not be surrendered under any circumstances,” he said, adding that reinforcements had already been sent to the affected area.
The government’s decision to resume the subsidised food scheme comes as the state continues efforts to restore the benefits that had been temporarily halted during the budget-related delay.
