Leaders and members from VPP, Congress, BJP and UDP joined the NPP ahead of the Shillong Lok Sabha by-election, backing candidate Dr DRL Nonglait
Shillong: The ruling National People’s Party (NPP) received a pre-poll boost on Thursday as several leaders and members from the Voice of the People Party (VPP), Congress, BJP and United Democratic Party (UDP) joined the party ahead of the upcoming Shillong Lok Sabha by-election.
The new entrants extended their support to NPP candidate Dr DRL Nonglait at an election campaign meeting held at Rymbai village in East Jaintia Hills.
Deputy Chief Minister and NPP national vice-president Sniawbhalang Dhar welcomed the leaders and members into the party. NPP MLA from Sutnga-Saipung Santa Mary Shylla, along with other party leaders and workers, also attended the programme.
Addressing the gathering, Nonglait said the induction of leaders from other political parties would strengthen the NPP’s prospects in the by-election. “Many leaders have come to join the NPP. They have decided today to align themselves with the NPP,” Nonglait said, expressing confidence that their support would help the party secure a decisive victory.
Speaking about his candidature, Nonglait said he accepted the NPP’s offer after assessing the performance of the NPP-led Meghalaya government. He said the government’s work had convinced him that the party was committed to the development and progress of the people of Meghalaya.
