Massive blaze destroys several shops at Joykrishnapur Markey, with authorities probing whether a short circuit or gas triggered the fire
Hailakandi: Around 20 to 25 shops were destroyed after a massive fire broke out at Joykrishnapur Market in Assam’s Hailakandi district late on Friday night, causing losses worth several lakh rupees. According to officials and eyewitnesses, the blaze started in a shop at around 1 am before rapidly spreading across a large section of the market.
Following announcements through the local mosque’s public address system, residents rushed to the spot and attempted to contain the flames. However, the fire continued to spread until Fire and Emergency Services personnel arrived and brought it under control.
Residents alleged that the fire brigade reached the market nearly two hours after being informed. Zila Parishad member Dilwar Hussain Barbhuiya visited the site, questioned the alleged delay in the emergency response and urged the government to provide financial assistance to affected traders.
Police from Lala Police Station and Abdullapur Police Outpost were deployed, while Additional Superintendent of Police Shekhar Jyoti Ray inspected the affected market and reviewed the situation.
Authorities suspect the fire may have been caused by either an electrical short circuit or a gas cylinder explosion. The exact cause, however, is yet to be confirmed, and an investigation is underway.
