Delhi Police shifted activist Sonam Wangchuk to Safdarjung Hospital citing medical advice and a Delhi High Court order, while supporters alleged he was forcibly removed from the Jantar Mantar protest site
New Delhi: Climate activist and educationist Sonam Wangchuk was shifted to Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital on his 21st day of the indefinite hunger strike, with police citing medical advice and directions from the Delhi High Court.
Delhi Police said Wangchuk was moved for urgent medical intervention after his health deteriorated. Doctors at Safdarjung Hospital said he was weak due to prolonged fasting and mild dehydration but remained fully alert and stable under continuous monitoring.
Supporters of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which is leading protests over alleged irregularities in NEET and other examinations, claimed Wangchuk was forcibly removed from the Jantar Mantar protest site. Videos circulating online showed police personnel taking him away amid protests from supporters.
Following the hospitalisation, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke announced that he had begun an indefinite hunger strike in Wangchuk’s place and said the planned July 20 march to Parliament would continue.
The development triggered sharp political reactions, with several opposition leaders criticising the police action and urging the government to engage in dialogue with the protesters.
The Delhi High Court had earlier directed authorities to monitor Wangchuk’s health daily and provide medical assistance whenever necessary.
