Despite doctors’ warnings that his condition has entered a critical stage, Sonam Wangchuk says he will continue his indefinite fast and urges supporters to join the July 20 Parliament march
New Delhi: Climate activist and educator Sonam Wangchuk on Friday vowed to continue his indefinite hunger strike as it entered its 20th day, despite doctors warning that his health has reached a critical stage.
Addressing supporters at Jantar Mantar, Wangchuk said he remained determined to continue the protest and urged people to join the Cockroach Janta Party’s proposed march to Parliament on July 20, coinciding with the start of the Monsoon Session.
“I am weak from the outside but very strong inside. I will stay alive till July 20 at any cost,” Wangchuk said, adding jokingly that he would “come back as a ghost” if supporters failed to make the march successful.
Doctors monitoring his condition said Wangchuk has lost around 9 kg since beginning the fast and is surviving only on water. They warned that prolonged fasting has forced his body to consume fat and muscle reserves, which could eventually affect vital organs.
The Delhi High Court has directed authorities to monitor Wangchuk’s health daily and provide medical assistance if required. The protest, launched by the Cockroach Janta Party on June 20, centres on demands linked to the alleged NEET examination paper leak.
