Ten victims are from Tamil Nadu, three from Andhra Pradesh and two from Kerala; 21 people were rescued after the speedboat capsized near Phu Quoc Island
New Delhi: The Embassy of India in Vietnam on Saturday confirmed that all 15 people killed in the boat capsize near Phu Quoc Island were Indian nationals and released the names of the victims received from Vietnamese authorities.
According to the Embassy, the deceased include 10 people from Tamil Nadu, three from Andhra Pradesh and two from Kerala. Expressing condolences, the Embassy said it remains in constant touch with local authorities and is providing all possible assistance to the affected families.
“It is with profound grief that we share the list of 15 Indian nationals who have lost their lives in the tragic boat accident near Phu Quoc Island today. Our prayers are with the families of the deceased,” the Embassy posted on X.
The speedboat, carrying 36 people, including 32 Indian tourists, three crew members and one attendant, capsized about 400 metres off May Rut Ngoai Islet. Rescue teams, assisted by local boats, saved 21 people, including 17 passengers and four crew members. Two survivors remain in critical condition and are undergoing intensive medical treatment.
The Vietnam Coast Guard Region 4 Command deployed rescue vessels and personnel immediately after receiving information about the accident.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Droupadi Murmu, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and several other leaders expressed grief over the tragedy. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin also conveyed condolences to the bereaved families.
The Indian Embassy and the Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City said they are continuing to assist survivors and coordinate with Vietnamese authorities during the ongoing rescue and relief operations.
