Heads of anti-drug agencies from BRICS nations will meet in Guwahati on July 6–7 to strengthen intelligence sharing, operational coordination and cooperation against synthetic drugs, darknet trafficking and emerging narcotics threats
Guwahati: India will host the BRICS Heads of Anti-Drug Agencies Meeting in Guwahati, Assam, on July 6 and 7, bringing together anti-narcotics chiefs and senior officials from BRICS member countries to strengthen international cooperation against drug trafficking and substance abuse.
Organised by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) under the Ministry of Home Affairs, the two-day meeting will focus on combating synthetic drugs, preventing precursor chemical diversion, enhancing intelligence sharing, improving operational coordination, and strengthening institutional capacity to tackle evolving drug-related threats.
The discussions come amid growing concerns over the use of synthetic drugs, New Psychoactive Substances (NPS), darknet platforms and cryptocurrency-based transactions by transnational drug trafficking networks. Delegates will participate in six thematic sessions covering digital technology for drug interdiction, darknet-enabled trafficking, emerging narcotics, precursor control, demand reduction and institutional cooperation. The meeting will conclude with the adoption of a Joint Declaration.
As BRICS Chair for 2026, India will also present its Vision Document on Narcotics Control (2026–2029), highlighting its strategy of strict enforcement, public awareness, rehabilitation and community participation to build a drug-free society.
Welcoming the delegates, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “Assam looks forward to host this important meeting and welcomes all participating delegates. India is making excellent progress towards a drug free society and tomorrow’s deliberations will help to deepen coordination amongst BRICS members in tackling this menace.”
