Parismita Hazarika dies after a decayed tree collapses on scooter near Bhootnath-Kalipur; AASU blames official negligence and seeks a thorough probe
Guwahati: The death of a college student after a decayed tree collapsed onto a scooter in Guwahati has sparked demands for accountability, with the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) alleging administrative negligence and calling for a detailed investigation.
Parismita Hazarika, a student of Pandu College, was killed on Friday morning when a tree fell on the two-wheeler she was travelling on near the Bhootnath-Kalipur area. She and fellow student Jyotirmoy Mohan were reportedly heading to Pandu College to appear for an examination when the incident occurred.
While Jyotirmoy sustained injuries and is undergoing treatment at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Parismita was trapped beneath the fallen tree. Rescue teams from the Railways and the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) later removed the tree and rushed her to hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
Reacting strongly to the incident, AASU president Utpal Sarma said the tragedy should not be viewed merely as an accident. “Society cannot and should not treat the death of Parismita Hazarika as a mere accident. Calling it an unfortunate incident alone would be an injustice,” Sarma said.
He alleged that the tree had remained in a hazardous condition for a long period and questioned why the authorities failed to remove it despite the apparent risk. “Why did the Railway authorities and the Guwahati Municipal Corporation fail to act? They must answer,” he said.
AASU has demanded a comprehensive inquiry, action against those responsible, proper treatment for the injured student and adequate compensation for the bereaved family.
