“This is Not a Bulldozer State”: Mamata Banerjee Appeals to Calcutta HC Amid Bengal Violence Claims

Former West Bengal chief minister seeks court intervention over alleged attacks on TMC workers and offices after BJP’s 2026 election victory

Kolkata: Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee appeared before the Calcutta High Court in connection with a PIL alleging widespread post-poll violence in West Bengal following the 2026 Assembly election results.

Dressed in a lawyer’s robe, Banerjee personally argued the matter before Chief Justice HC Sujoy Pal and Justice Parthasarathi Sen, urging the court to intervene immediately. “Please protect the people of Bengal. This is not a bulldozer state,” she submitted during the hearing.

The petition, filed by advocate Shirshanya Bandyopadhyay, alleged that several Trinamool Congress workers were attacked, displaced and targeted after the BJP’s victory in the state elections. The BJP won 207 seats, ending the TMC’s 15-year rule, while the ruling party was reduced to 80 seats.

Banerjee further alleged that police were refusing to register FIRs and claimed violence was escalating across several districts. “In front of police they are capturing and looting houses and offices,” she told the court.

Meanwhile, chaotic scenes erupted outside the courtroom as a section of lawyers raised “chor” slogans at the former chief minister while she was leaving the premises. Senior TMC leader Kalyan Banerjee accused BJP-backed lawyers of attempting to heckle her.

The BJP, however, denied involvement and alleged that many incidents were carried out by TMC workers posing as BJP supporters.
