Congress and Left leaders accuse Tamil Nadu Governor of ignoring constitutional convention as support grows for Vijay-led TVK

Chennai: Support for Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) continued to grow on Saturday, with senior opposition leaders sharply criticising the Tamil Nadu Governor over the ongoing government formation deadlock.
Priyank Kharge said the Governor should allow the single largest party to prove its strength on the Assembly floor rather than seek repeated demonstrations at Raj Bhavan. “The majority has to be tested inside the House, not in the Governor’s residence,” he remarked, alleging that the Governor appeared to be acting under directions from the Centre.
Meanwhile, CPI(M) general secretary M. A. Baby confirmed that Left MLAs were backing the formation of a TVK-led government. Speaking in Madurai, he said, “The verdict is clear. People rejected the incumbent government, did not fully back the opposition, and almost elected a new party.”

The CPI(M) general secretary further argued that constitutional precedent and Supreme Court rulings support inviting either the single largest party or a post-poll alliance to form the government. “Lok Bhavan is not where the majority is tested; it must happen on the floor of the House,” he said.
He also revealed that CPI(M) would formally write to Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar urging him to invite TVK to form the government. According to Baby, the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi was also expected to submit a support letter soon.
Consequently, the swearing-in ceremony scheduled for Saturday was postponed. Earlier, Vijay had also visited the VCK headquarters to meet party president Thol Thirumavalavan amid efforts to secure additional support.
