Amit Shah announces unanimous support for Adhikari as BJP prepares to take power in West Bengal after ending TMC’s 15-year rule

West Bengal: Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari was on Friday elected leader of the BJP legislature party in West Bengal, clearing the way for him to become the state’s first Chief Minister from the BJP.
The decision was finalised during a BJP legislative meeting in Kolkata chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. “All proposals were received in favour of Suvendu Adhikari,” Shah said after the meeting.
Adhikari later met Governor R. N. Ravi and formally staked claim to form the next government. The swearing-in ceremony will take place on May 9 at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Ground in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, senior Union ministers, and several BJP Chief Ministers.
The BJP secured a historic mandate in the 2026 Assembly elections by winning 207 seats and ending the All India Trinamool Congress’s 15-year rule. Adhikari also defeated Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur, considered one of the TMC’s strongest bastions.
Addressing reporters, Adhikari said the new government would focus on “security for women, nationalism, and development.” He also promised that the BJP would fulfil every guarantee announced by Modi during the campaign.
Meanwhile, political tensions remain high in Bengal following reports of post-poll violence across several districts, including the killing of Adhikari’s personal assistant in North 24 Parganas earlier this week.
