Amit Shah Arrives in Kolkata: BJP Moves to Finalise West Bengal’s First BJP CM

Key meeting with newly elected MLAs underway as Bengal prepares for historic government transition on Rabindra Jayanti

West Bengal: West Bengal is entering a historic political transition as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) prepares to form its first government in the state following its sweeping victory in the 2026 Assembly elections. Attention is now firmly focused on who will lead the new administration, with senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari emerging as the strongest contender for the Chief Minister’s post.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah reached Kolkata on Friday and is scheduled to chair a crucial meeting with newly elected BJP MLAs later in the day. The meeting is expected to finalise the legislative party leader and outline the roadmap for the new government.

The BJP has already announced that the swearing-in ceremony will take place on May 9, coinciding with Rabindranath Tagore’s birth anniversary. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also likely to attend the event after earlier assuring supporters during a campaign rally in Barrackpore that he would return for the oath-taking ceremony.

Meanwhile, political tensions continue in the state after the BJP secured 207 seats, reducing the All India Trinamool Congress to 80. Outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has refused to step down, calling the developments a “black day.”

Governor R. N. Ravi has since dissolved the Assembly, formally clearing the path for the BJP-led government.
