ULFA-I Cadre Arrested in Sivasagar: Cache of Arms and Ammunition Seized

Myanmar-trained ULFA-I cadre Biren Chetia was held with explosives and firearm during an intelligence-based crackdown

Sivasagar: Acting on precise intelligence inputs, Assam Police apprehended an active member of the United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) in Sivasagar district and seized a cache of arms and explosives, officials confirmed on Wednesday.

The accused, identified as Biren Chetia, was arrested from the Palengi area under Demow police station limits. During the operation, police recovered eight hand grenades, one improvised bottle grenade, a 9 mm pistol, 10 live rounds of ammunition, Rs 13,500 in cash, and several incriminating documents from his possession.

Sivasagar Senior Superintendent of Police Papori Chetia said the operation was carefully executed following specific intelligence about the militant’s movement. “Based on credible inputs, our team launched a targeted crackdown and successfully apprehended the ULFA-I cadre,” she stated. She further added that the accused had allegedly reached the area to hand over explosives and weapons to another individual.

According to sources, the arrested individual is believed to be a trained ULFA-I operative with links to camps in Myanmar, indicating a deeper network and cross-border connections. Investigators are now probing the intended recipients of the arms and the broader supply chain.

The arrest is being seen as a significant step in disrupting militant activity in upper Assam, even as security agencies continue to monitor insurgent movements closely.
