Two-day visit marks 50 years of statehood; focus on connectivity, infrastructure and public services
Gangtok: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will begin a two-day visit to Sikkim on Monday, during which he is set to unveil development projects worth over Rs 4,000 crore. The visit coincides with the 50th Statehood celebrations, with the main event scheduled in Gangtok.
The initiatives span key sectors such as transport, power, healthcare, education, tourism and urban development. Notably, the Prime Minister will lay the foundation for two double-lane steel arch bridges over the Teesta River at Sirwani and Lower Samdong. These projects aim to improve connectivity between Namchi and Gangtok and ensure smoother movement throughout the year.
In addition, an upgraded road linking Birdhang and Namchi via Kitchudumra will be inaugurated, reducing travel time and enhancing safety. Meanwhile, a modernised power distribution system in Gangtok will also be launched to ensure a more reliable electricity supply as the city expands.
At the same time, security has been significantly tightened across Gangtok. Authorities have imposed temporary traffic restrictions, including the closure of a key National Highway stretch between Ganju Lama Dwar and Zero Point from 2:30 pm. Officials have advised commuters to use alternative routes.
According to the schedule, Modi will arrive around 3 pm and later attend official events, including a visit to the Orchidarium and a public address at Paljor Stadium on April 28.
