Poll body cites possible MCC violation, seeks urgent clarification during Tamil Nadu poll campaign

New Delhi: The Election Commission of India has served a notice to Mallikarjun Kharge, directing him to respond within 24 hours over remarks in which he allegedly described Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “terrorist.”
Acting on the matter, the Commission said it has taken prima facie cognisance of the statement and found that it may breach provisions of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). The remarks were made during the ongoing campaign for the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections 2026, where Kharge is serving as a star campaigner for the Congress.
In its communication, the poll panel stated, “the Commission is prima facie of the opinion that… provisions of the MCC and relevant instructions have been violated.” It further emphasised that political discourse must remain within the framework of civility and established guidelines during elections.
Moreover, Kharge has been given an opportunity to present his explanation within the stipulated timeframe. The Commission made it clear that if no response is received within 24 hours, it will assume he has nothing further to add and proceed to take a decision accordingly.
The notice underscores the Commission’s continued focus on maintaining decorum in election campaigns, especially as polling intensifies.
