Row Erupts After Police Search at AJP Chief Lurinjyoti Gogoi’s Residence in Dibrugarh

Party alleges procedural lapses and political pressure; BJP counters with claims of AJP-led violence in Khowang

Dibrugarh: A political controversy has erupted in Assam’s Dibrugarh after police conducted a search at the residence of Lurinjyoti Gogoi, chief of the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), in the Godapani area.

Party leaders alleged that a police team led by DSP Amrit Ranjan Barman carried out the operation without a warrant or prior notice, raising questions over due process. The AJP strongly objected to the move, calling it politically motivated.

Addressing the media, Chittaranjan Basumatary claimed a large police contingent entered the premises under “political pressure” and demanded accountability. The party also issued a 24-hour ultimatum seeking the officer’s removal, alleging repeated visits to the residence without proper procedure.

Eyewitnesses reported a brief confrontation during the operation, while some claimed items were taken from the house. Authorities have not confirmed these allegations.

The incident comes amid heightened tensions in Khowang, where the AJP has accused ruling party workers of targeting its members. Basumatary alleged assaults and vandalism despite formal complaints.

Responding to the charges, Assam Minister Bimal Borah rejected the claims and accused AJP supporters of engaging in violence. He alleged attacks on BJP workers, including those assisting from outside the state, and damage to party property.

As both sides exchange accusations, the episode has further escalated political tensions in Upper Assam, prompting calls for a fair and independent probe into the incident.
