Suren Daimari Says Congress “Betrayed” Him, Announces Exit a Day Before Assam Polls

Udalguri candidate claims lack of support; EC says name will remain on EVMs

Guwahati: Congress candidate from Assam’s Udalguri seat, Suren Daimari, announced his resignation from the party and withdrawal from the election just a day before polling, alleging that the party had “betrayed” him.

Furthermore, Daimari stated, “They defrauded me. Even after giving me the ticket, they didn’t respond. I called them multiple times, but they didn’t answer. I haven’t received any support, that’s why I stepped away.” He further added that there was “no advantage” in continuing with the Congress.

However, the Indian National Congress clarified that Daimari has not formally submitted his resignation to the party.

Election officials confirmed that his name will still appear on the electronic voting machines, as the deadline for withdrawal of nominations has already passed. “Polling teams have already left for their stations, so there’s no question of withdrawing now,” an official said, adding that voters can still cast their vote in his favour.

The Udalguri seat is witnessing a four-cornered contest, with candidates from BPF, UPPL, and Voters Party International also in the fray. Assam will go to polls on April 9, with results scheduled for May 4.
