Tehran targets strategic US-UK base in Indian Ocean, signalling long-range strike capability and raising global tensions
The remote island of Diego Garcia has come under global focus after Iran reportedly launched ballistic missiles targeting the key US-UK military base located there. While the missiles did not hit their target, the move marks a significant escalation and signals Tehran’s growing long-range strike capability.
Located in the Chagos Archipelago, Diego Garcia hosts a strategically critical joint military base operated by the United States and the United Kingdom since the 1970s. Often described as an “unsinkable aircraft carrier,” the base plays a central role in global military operations.
Its importance lies largely in its location. Positioned in the Indian Ocean, it provides rapid access to key regions including the Middle East, South Asia and parts of Africa. Over the years, it has served as a launchpad for major operations such as the Gulf War, the War in Afghanistan and the Iraq War, enabling long-range bomber missions and naval deployments.
Diego Garcia also functions as a major logistics and refuelling hub, allowing the US to project power across multiple theatres. In the context of rising tensions with Iran, the base is seen as a crucial staging ground for any potential military action, which is why Tehran has previously warned it could become a legitimate target.
Analysts say Iran’s move was aimed at demonstrating its ability to strike far beyond its immediate region, while also deterring the US and its allies from using the base in any future conflict.
