From Himanta Biswa Sarma in Jalukbari to a mix of senior leaders, new entrants, women, as well as young leaders, the BJP signals a strong electoral push

Guwahati: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on March 19 released its list of candidates for the upcoming 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly elections. Fielding nominees across 88 constituencies, it marks a significant move ahead of the polls.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will once again contest from Jalukbari (37), reaffirming his position as the party’s principal face in Assam. Other prominent prominent names include Diplu Ranjan Sarmah (New Guwahati), Vijay Kumar Gupta (Guwahati Central), Chandramohan Patowary (Tihu), Ranjeet Kumar Dass (Bhowanipur-Sorbhog), and Pijush Hazarika (Jagiroad), indicating continuity in leadership.

The party has also given notable representation to women and younger candidates. Leaders such as Madhavi Das (Birsing-Jarua), Jyostna Kalita (Chamaria), Nilima Devi (Mangaldai), Ajanta Neog (Golaghat), Niso Terangpi (Diphu ST), and Rupali Langthasa (Haflong ST) feature in the list, reflecting an effort to broaden inclusivity and bring fresh energy into the electoral contest.
Pradyut Bordoloi has been fielded from Dispur (33) and Bhupen Kumar Borah from Bihpuria (73). These developments have added a new dimension to Assam’s evolving political landscape.
The BJP’s selections highlight a calibrated strategy aimed at maintaining its stronghold while expanding its reach across key regions ahead of the elections.
