Congress Temporarily Halts Alliance Discussions With Raijor Dal Ahead of 2026 Assam Polls

Gaurav Gogoi says discussions on a possible alliance will remain on hold for now but may be revisited later.

Guwahati: The Indian National Congress (INC) has decided to temporarily halt discussions with Raijor Dal regarding a possible electoral alliance for the 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly elections.

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi said the party had initially explored the idea of joining hands with Raijor Dal in response to public expectations that opposition parties should unite to present a stronger challenge in the upcoming polls.

According to Gogoi, several rounds of discussions were held between the two sides. However, the talks could not create the required environment for a formal alliance to take shape. He explained that electoral alliances must also consider practical factors such as the winnability of seats and ground-level coordination.

The Congress, he said, had adopted a flexible approach during the negotiations and engaged in dialogue over possible seat-sharing arrangements. Despite these efforts, both parties were unable to move forward with a mutually acceptable understanding.

Gogoi added that the decision to pause discussions does not completely rule out future cooperation, indicating that the possibility of an alliance could still be reconsidered later.

The development comes as opposition parties in Assam continue exploring strategies to challenge the BJP-led ruling alliance in the 2026 state elections.
