Move aims to widen representation and open higher administrative roles to historically marginalised communities
Guwahati: In a step aimed at strengthening inclusive governance, the Government of Assam has extended a 3 percent reservation for Tea Tribes and Adivasi communities to Grade I and Grade II posts in the state services. The decision is expected to improve representation in higher administrative positions and create greater access to leadership roles within the government.
The policy marks a significant shift from limited entry-level opportunities to broader participation across decision-making levels. Officials say the move is designed to ensure that merit and opportunity go hand in hand, allowing talented candidates from these communities to rise through the ranks and contribute directly to governance and policy implementation.
For decades, Tea Tribes and Adivasis have played a crucial role in Assam’s social and economic fabric, particularly in the tea garden sector. By opening Grade I and II positions, the government hopes to create a more representative bureaucracy.
