Statehood Day Wishes Pour In as Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram Celebrate Four Decades of Progress

From infrastructure gains to cultural pride, the two Northeast states mark February 20 with reflection, celebration and renewed hope

Guwahati: February 20 is more than a ceremonial date for Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram. It is a day of pride, reflection and renewed aspiration for the people of both states. Over the past decade, the twin hill states have steadily transformed their development stories through stronger connectivity, improved infrastructure, better public services and a firm commitment to preserving their cultural identities. From remote border districts to bustling town centres, change is visible in roads, airports, digital networks and rising economic opportunities.

In Itanagar, the occasion was marked with colour and celebration as Chief Minister Pema Khandu attended the 40th Statehood Day function at Indira Gandhi Park. In the presence of Governor KT Parnaik, cultural performances, traditional dances and community gatherings captured the spirit of unity and pride. The event celebrated four decades of Arunachal’s journey as a full-fledged state and highlighted its unique tribal heritage and collective resilience.

Both Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram share a similar historical milestone. On February 20, 1987, they formally became full-fledged states of the Indian Union, stepping out of their Union Territory status. Since then, each state has carved its own path while contributing to the larger story of the Northeast.

Arunachal Pradesh, often called India’s frontier state, has focused on strategic infrastructure and border connectivity. Mizoram, known for its lasting peace and strong community institutions, has prioritised social development and inclusive growth.

The day also saw greetings pour in from leaders across the country. Himanta Biswa Sarma extended warm wishes to the sister states, highlighting their shared bond and praying for their continued harmony and progress. Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Arunachal’s natural beauty and tribal diversity and lauded Mizoram’s strong community spirit and cultural richness.

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi wished both states strength and unity, while President Droupadi Murmu commended their contributions to national development and extended her best wishes for sustained prosperity.

As the two states step into another year of statehood, their journeys reflect how resilience, peace and people-driven governance can reshape regions once considered remote. February 20 stands not only as a celebration of history, but also as a reminder of the steady progress shaping the future of the Northeast.
