Following a sweeping electoral mandate for the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, Tarique Rahman takes oath as Prime Minister at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, marking a significant political shift in Bangladesh

Dhaka: Tarique Rahman was sworn in as the new Prime Minister of Bangladesh on Tuesday, following a decisive win by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in the February 12 general elections, marking a watershed moment in the country’s political history.
Rahman, 60, took the oath of office at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban in a break from tradition, where swearing-in ceremonies are usually held at the presidential residence, Bangabhaban. President Mohammed Shahabuddin administered the oath, officially installing Rahman as prime minister.
The new government assumed office after the BNP secured a commanding parliamentary majority in the elections, winning more than two-thirds of the seats in the 13th Jatiya Sangsad, a result widely seen as a major political shift following years of turbulence.
Rahman’s ascent underscores a dramatic turn in Bangladeshi politics. Born into one of the country’s most influential political families, he returned to Bangladesh after nearly two decades in exile to lead his party’s campaign. His leadership represents the end of an era dominated by two of Bangladesh’s most iconic female leaders, his mother, former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, and his long-time rival, Sheikh Hasina.
The new administration takes charge at a critical juncture, as Bangladesh emerges from a period marked by political upheaval and transitions. Analysts note that Rahman’s government will face pressing challenges, including economic recovery, institutional reforms and restoring confidence among investors and local communities.
Foreign dignitaries and regional leaders, including representatives from neighbouring countries, attended the swearing-in ceremony, reflecting the international significance of Bangladesh’s political transition. India’s Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla was among the notable guests present in Dhaka for the occasion.
