“If Tariffs Were Zero, You Might Have Won”: Piyush Goyal’s Cricket Quip Lightens Mood at India–US Reception

Trade talks meet T20 banter as minister praises US team’s ‘fabulous’ performance during Ambassador Sergio Gor’s gathering

New Delhi: A diplomatic evening focused on strengthening India–United States trade and strategic ties took a humorous turn when Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal blended cricket with commerce during a reception hosted by US Ambassador Sergio Gor in New Delhi. Gor was welcomed by the senior Indian leaders, members of the diplomatic community, business figures and partners from both nations.

“Amid our nations’ renewed trade framework and deepening strategic ties, the real magic happens in these personal moments where trust, ideas, and shared futures spark,” Gor said, thanking External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar, Goyal and more than 75 ambassadors for attending. “Here’s to the boundless potential between India and America.”

Speaking at the gathering, Goyal praised the growing engagement between the two countries and then shifted to a lighter note, referring to the recent T20 World Cup match between India and the United States.

“The US may not have won yesterday’s match (against India in the T20 World Cup), but I must say, for a country which has not known Cricket and has started on cricket a few years ago, the performance was fabulous,” he said, commending the American team’s rapid progress in the sport.

Linking the match to ongoing trade negotiations, the minister drew laughter with a witty comparison. He stated, “Sergio pointed out one very important factor – the US lost the match by 18% and a very humble request I made to him as a suggestion that if only you had made the reciprocal tariff zero, you would possibly have won the match.”

The remark, delivered in jest, was a playful reference to the recent reduction of reciprocal tariffs from 25 per cent to 18 per cent under the evolving India–US trade framework. Beyond the humour, the exchange reflected the growing maturity and comfort in bilateral relations, underscoring how strong diplomatic and economic partnerships can foster both substantive dialogue and moments of easy camaraderie between the two nations.
